I have been where many of you are. Here’s a little about me and why I do this work. 💕
In my late 20’s I became a nurse. My young mom had terminal cancer, and this was a calling for me, not just a profession. I wanted to alleviate suffering and bring comfort to people. I loved my job and looked forward to it. However, behind the scenes I was wrestling with some hidden battles. Stress was ever-present, juggling the job and three small kids. Initially, I found solace in casual social drinking –a way to unwind after a long day or to relax with friends (we have all heard of the mommy wine time culture). Life threw its inevitable curve balls and what had begun as a harmless way to decompress became a crutch, a coping mechanism during times of stress and emotional upset.
I started the cycle of drink/guilt/shame and negative self-talk. This greatly compounded my struggles and the moments of joy in my life became fewer because I just couldn’t see them anymore. They were being overshadowed by despair over the negative cycle. Even though at this point I had a loving husband, a good job and a beautiful family, I found myself grappling with feelings of hopelessness and thoughts of suicide. It was a wake-up call, a huge realization that my coping mechanism was doing more harm than good. I needed to be here for my family and knew I had to fix this. At this point I made the decision to enter rehab. There I confronted my issues and began the process of unraveling the complex emotions that had led me down this path.
Rehab marked a turning point for me, but true freedom emerged from a profound shift in my mindset and understanding. I had discovered This Naked Mind, a transformative book and set of ideas that changed all my perceptions. Through introspection and the guidance of this newfound wisdom, I was able to rewire my thoughts and emotions. I learned healthier coping mechanisms and found self-compassion. I became empowered by self-awareness and renewed purpose. This purpose has led me to become a certified coach in Affective Liminal Psychology (ALP). I want to share this process with others to rewire the subconscious mind and rediscover the self-love and compassion we are born with. I want everyone I work with to build a life they love and don’t want to escape from.
About ALP
Affective Liminal Psychology™: The Science of The System of Self; Definitions of each term:
Affective: The Experience of Feeling or Emotion
The term "affective" pertains to emotions, feelings, or moods, particularly in relation to how they are expressed, experienced, or influenced. Affective processes involve the subjective and emotional aspects of human experiences, encompassing a wide range of emotional states and expressions. In psychology and related fields, "affective" is often used to describe the emotional or feeling component of human behavior and mental processes. It can refer to the expression of emotions, emotional responses, or the impact of emotions on cognition and behavior.
This is a vital aspect of Affective Liminal Psychology™ (ALP) because according to research emotions drive behavior. The concept that our emotions drive our behavior, emphasizing the emotion before the behavior change, is deceptively simple, much like all paradigm-shifting ideas. Thus, the emotional landscape serves as a tool or compass for clients, helping them navigate from their current life situation to where they want to be.
Liminal: The Threshold Between Two Distinct States
The term 'liminal' denotes a transitional or initial stage of a process, or a position at or on both sides of a boundary or threshold. Liminality often precedes personal transformation. To truly understand the emotional drivers of our behavior, we must engage with the liminal, or in-between space.
ALP recognizes that real change happens in these Liminal Spaces. Specifically, ALP focuses on the spaces existing between the conscious and subconscious, between stimulus and response, between intention (or origin) and destination, and between our often false perceptions and our truest selves. It's within these spaces that we believe insights can be revealed and change occurs.
Psychology: The Study of Mind & Behavior
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior providing insights into human thought, emotion and behavior, allowing individuals to better understand themselves and society as a whole. ALP approaches psychological exploration from the simple theory that Affect is not simply a factor of behavior but, more often than not, the driving force behind our behaviors. And the path to changing our behavior and living a more peaceful, and joyful life, is through a shift in our emotional landscape, which occurs through the key dimensions of the liminal, or in-between spaces in our human experience.
